Position: Sewer and Watermain Mainline Excavator Operator

Job Description:  A water and sewer mainline excavator required to work with ground personnel in the excavation of trenches to proper depth/grade, to ensure pipe can be installed at the correct line and grade.  Operator needs to be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole sections, etc., and ensure safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation.

Main Duties:

• Ensure trenches are excavated to the proper depth, grade and side slopes.
• Follow directions of ground crew regarding bulk excavating, fine grading, hoisting, and gravel placement.
• Cut grade efficiently to allow for quick placement of bedding material, minimizing exposure time in wet conditions and ensuring production is on schedule.
• Ensure all trench work meets OHSA requirements, including trench boxes, slide-rails, shafts, etc.
• Required to perform daily pre-operational inspection of equipment, including regular maintenance to ensure proper and safe functioning.
• Identifying defective parts of malfunctioning equipment components.
• Follow proper safety guidelines and procedures including reporting any potentially unsafe work practices.
• Ability to work in collaboration with the Foreman, Site Supervisors, and Health and Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents and/or near misses on the worksite to ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the TACC Construction Ltd.’s Health and Safety Program.
• Review a daily schedule and follow specific instructions for excavating.
• Capable of diligently focusing on attention to safety, communication, stamina, accuracy, teamwork, and time management.

Qualifications:

Must haves:

• Thorough knowledge and experience operating a 390 excavator or equivalent
• Experience in sewer and watermain projects

Job Description:  A crane operator’s job is to safely lift, move, position, and place materials and equipment using specialized machinery. They also perform pre-operational inspections, calculate crane capacities, and ensure compliance with safety laws and guidelines.

Main Duties:

• Operating a Link-Belt 138 or a Kobelco 1100 crawler crane to precisely lift, move, position or place equipment and materials in a trench for a sewer and watermain crew.  Lifts include, but are not limited to, sewer and watermain pipes, manhole sections, chambers, stone hoppers, trench boxes, etc.
• Listening and carrying out instructions given from ground crew.
• Performing pre-operational inspection and calculating crane capacities using known weights to prepare for rigging and hoisting.
• Inspecting machinery and equipment to make sure they function properly.
• Following safety guidelines and protocols, including keeping an up to date logbook
• Reviewing a daily schedule to ensure production can be met without compromising safety.
• Identifying defective parts on malfunctioning cranes and following proper safety guidelines and procedures, reporting any potentially unsafe practices.

Qualifications:

• MUST have a Trade certification 339A License
• A valid driver’s G license, own a vehicle, and willing to commute to and from different work site locations
• In-depth knowledge and practice of OHSA safety standards and precautions

The 973 track loader operator runs a track-type (crawler) loader in the soft, wet, or uneven ground conditions common to open-trench sewer and watermain sites, where track flotation and traction are needed for loading, dozing, backfilling, and moving material.

Main Duties

• Load haul trucks and move excavated spoil in wet or unstable ground where wheeled equipment cannot operate effectively.
• Backfill trenches and place granular material in controlled lifts behind the pipe crew.
• Doze, push up, and stockpile material; rough-grade the work area and maintain site access.
• Move pipe, stone, and equipment around the site as directed by the ground crew.
• Work safely near open excavations, maintaining stable track positioning and safe distances from trench edges and workers.
• Assist with site cleanup, haul-road maintenance, and erosion and sediment control measures.
• Perform daily pre-operational inspection and routine maintenance, including undercarriage and track checks; report defective components.
• Follow ground-crew directions and hand signals.

The mainline 950 front loader operator runs a wheel loader in support of the sewer and watermain crew — loading and hauling material, supplying the trench with bedding stone and granular backfill, loading trucks, and keeping the work area organized so that pipe installation production is not compromised.

Main Duties

• Load haul trucks with excavated material (spoil) and clear it from the work area.
• Supply the trench and crew with bedding stone, granular, and backfill material as required to keep pace with pipe installation.
• Place and spread granular backfill into the trench in controlled lifts for the packer operator to compact.
• Stockpile and segregate materials (native soil, granular, topsoil) for reuse and backfill.
• Move pipe, manhole sections, and other materials around the site as directed by the ground crew.
• Assist with rough grading, haul-road maintenance, site access, and general site cleanup.
• Maintain safe distances from the open trench and from workers; follow ground-crew directions and hand signals.

The sheepsfoot (padfoot) packer operator compacts trench backfill over installed sewer and watermain, building up backfill in controlled lifts to the specified density to prevent settlement and surface failure, primarily in cohesive soils.

Main Duties

• Compact trench backfill in controlled lifts to the required density and specification, primarily in cohesive (clay) soils.
• Coordinate with the loader operator and crew so each lift is placed and compacted before the next is added.
• Make the required number of passes per lift to meet compaction specifications, avoiding over- or under-compaction.
• Work safely along and over the trench line, maintaining safe distances from workers and the open excavation.
• Assist with rough grading and proof-rolling of subgrade and backfilled areas as directed.
• Monitor compaction quality and report soft spots, voids, or moisture problems to the Foreman.
• Perform daily pre-operational inspection and routine maintenance; identify and report defective components.

Job Description: A Sewer and Watermain Foreman directly manages the installation, maintenance, and repair of sewer and watermain systems, leading a crew of skilled workers to complete all tasks required

• Supervises workers, subcontractors, and equipment

Job Description: As a Sewer and Watermain Mainline Topman, you will play a crucial role in assisting the crew in the installation, repair and decommissioning of various sewer and watermain projects. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the construction team to contribute to the successful completion of various infrastructure projects.

Main Duties:

• Organization:
  • Constantly observe sewer and watermain installation and production in trench and continually prepare all materials required ahead of time to complete the works so that production is not compromised

• Conducting elevation shots, reading grade, shooting the line and ensuring pipe is being properly placed in the ground
• Providing continuous inspections of pipes for cracks, problems with gaskets and any other deficiencies prior to lowering into the trench
• Responsible for cutting and preparing pipes and fittings for installation
• Assisting Pipelayer with installation as needed, locating utilities, and other duties as assigned by the Foreman
• Safely securing all loads by properly rigging pipes, manholes and other materials and equipment for crane/backhoe before being lowered into or removed from the trench
• Maintain orderliness, cleanliness and safety at jobsite

• Team Collaboration:
  • Work closely with the construction team, including equipment operators and labourers, to ensure smooth project workflow

• Communicating with the Foreman, Operators, and all crew members
• Ensures that materials for Pipelayer and other workers are ready as needed on the job site

Job Description:  As a Sewer and Watermain Mainline Pipe Layer, you will play a crucial role in the installation, repair, and decommissioning of sewer and watermain systems. You will be responsible for laying, aligning, and sealing pipes, ensuring that they meet project specifications and quality standards.

Main Duties:

• Working in conjunction with excavator operator to ensure subgrade elevation and slope is acceptable to receive bedding stone prior to pipe installation
• Grade the bedding stone correctly to make certain sewer pipes will be installed precisely
• Aligning pipes and checking grades during pipeline construction using pipe laser to confirm the pipe has been installed accurately
• Installing manholes, chambers, box culverts, shafts, and all related appurtenances

• Reporting directly to the Foreman and will be responsible for the installation of sewer and watermain, including concrete structures for both reconstruction and new construction projects

Job Description:  As a Sewer and Watermain Mainline Pipe Layer Helper, you will play a crucial role in assisting the pipelayer to install, repair, and decommission sewer and watermain systems. You will be responsible for assisting the pipelayer in the laying, aligning, and sealing of pipes, ensuring that they meet project specifications and quality standards.

Main Duties:

• Working in conjunction with excavator operator to ensure subgrade elevation and slope is acceptable to receive bedding stone prior to pipe installation
• Assist in grading the bedding stone correctly to make certain sewer pipes will be installed precisely
• Assist in aligning pipes and checking grades during pipeline construction using pipe laser to confirm the pipe has been installed accurately
• Assist in installing manholes, chambers, box culverts, shafts, and all related appurtenances
• Use hand tools such as jumping jacks, plate tampers, pumps, etc. whenever necessary
• Perform all other construction laboring duties when required
• Reporting directly to the Pipelayer, Topman, and Foreman and responsible for the installation of sewer and watermain, including concrete structures for both reconstruction and new construction projects

Qualifications:

• Previous experience working in a sewer and watermain crew
• Demonstrate organizational skills with strong knowledge and expertise
• Strong work ethic and ability to work in a team environment
• Good health and physical condition

• Minimum of 2 years of experience is required in sewer and watermain projects
• Safety training certificates such as First Aid/CPR, WHMIS 2015, Working at Heights, etc.
• Be able to travel to various sites and work in an outdoor environment in various weather conditions
• Be able to work weekends and evenings as occasionally required

Job Description:  The Sewer and Watermain Labourer performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties required for the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

• Perform quantity take-offs for materials, equipment, and labour under the direction of senior estimating staff.

• Review and interpret project specifications, drawings, tender documents, and addenda, flagging discrepancies and unclear scope to the Senior Estimator.

• Contact subcontractors and suppliers to request pricing, then log, organize, and summarize the quotations received.
• Support the assembly of bid submissions — confirming that forms, bonding, addenda acknowledgements, and required attachments are complete and accurate well ahead of closing.

• Maintain and organize estimating files, historical cost data, and supplier and subcontractor records.
• Attend pre-bid meetings and site visits with senior staff to build practical field knowledge.

Qualifications & Skills:

• 0–2 years of experience in construction estimating, engineering, or a related construction role. Co-op terms, internships, and summer field experience count — recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
• Post-secondary education required: diploma or degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Working knowledge of, or a demonstrated interest in learning:
  • Sewer, Watermain & Stormwater — municipal underground infrastructure, pipe materials (PVC, concrete, ductile iron, HDPE), mainline trenching, manholes, catch basins, valves, hydrants, culverts, and stormwater management works; exposure to OPS and municipal standards is an asset.
  • Earthworks — site grading, excavation, backfilling and compaction, cut-and-fill concepts, contour and grading plans, haul distances, material disposal, erosion control, and reading geotechnical reports.
  • Roadworks & Topworks — subgrade preparation, granular base installation, asphalt paving, curb and gutter, sidewalks, multi-use paths, traffic control, pavement markings, and final surface restoration.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications; formal blueprint reading coursework is an asset.
• Proficiency in Excel and MS Word. Exposure to Bluebeam, AutoCAD, or Primavera is an asset — training will be provided.
• Strong numerical accuracy and attention to detail. A missed quantity or a transposed figure carries real cost consequences, and care matters more than speed at this stage.
• Certifications — none are required at hire, and we support staff in pursuing:
  • Certified Engineering Technician (C.Tech) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.) — OACETT

  • Earthworks – familiar with grading, cut/fill diagrams, contour plans, mass haul diagrams, site grading, excavation, backfilling, compaction, cut-and-fill calculations, haul distances, trucking logistics, material disposal, geotechnical report interpretation, and erosion control measures.
  • Roadworks & Topworks – road subgrade preparation, granular base installation, asphalt paving processes, lift thickness and compaction requirements, curb and gutter installation, sidewalks, multi-use paths, decorative concrete finishes, traffic control, pavement markings, signage, and final surface restoration.
