Backhoe Operator – Rectification/Repairs

Job Description:  A Backhoe Operator holding a valid DZ or AZ licence is required to support our Rectification/Repairs department. The successful candidate will both operate the backhoe and drive the crew’s truck on site, performing localized excavation and repair of existing sewer and watermain infrastructure, deficiency and warranty work, and the hauling of materials, equipment and spoil to and from the worksite. The operator must excavate carefully around live, existing services, be aware of proper rigging of pipe, manhole sections, etc., and ensure safe work procedures are followed during the lowering of materials into the excavation.

Main Duties:

• Operate the backhoe to carry out localized excavations (spot digs) for the repair and replacement of existing sewer, watermain, service connections, valves, hydrants, manholes and catch basins.
• Safely operate and drive the crew’s truck (DZ or AZ) to transport the backhoe, materials, tools and spoil between the yard and active repair sites.
• Carefully expose and excavate around live, existing underground utilities, hand-digging or daylighting where required to avoid damaging services.
• Rig and lower pipe, fittings and manhole sections into the excavation, following safe hoisting procedures.
• Ensure all excavation and trench work meets OHSA requirements, including trench boxes, slide-rails, shoring, shafts, etc.
• Backfill, compact and prepare reinstated trenches and surfaces for restoration (asphalt, concrete, curb and sod).
• Respond to emergency repairs such as watermain breaks and sewer failures, often on short notice and in varying weather conditions.
• Perform daily pre-operational inspection of both the backhoe and the truck, secure all loads, and carry out regular maintenance to ensure proper and safe functioning.
• Identify defective parts or malfunctioning equipment components and report them promptly.
• Follow proper safety guidelines and procedures including reporting any potentially unsafe work practices.
• Ability to work in collaboration with the Foreman, Site Supervisors, and Health and Safety Department to investigate damage, incidents and/or near misses on the worksite to ensure proper procedures are carried out according to the TACC Construction Ltd.’s Health and Safety Program.
• Review the daily schedule and follow specific instructions for each repair location.
• Capable of diligently focusing on attention to safety, communication, stamina, accuracy, teamwork, and time management.

Qualifications:

Must haves:

• Must hold active membership in good standing with IUOE Local 793
• Valid DZ or AZ driver’s license in good standing, with a clean driver’s abstract.
• Thorough knowledge and experience operating a backhoe loader.
• Comfortable both operating the backhoe and driving the truck and moving between the two throughout the day.
• Experience with sewer and watermain repairs, service connections and/or restoration work
• Be able to accurately judge distance and slopes, and excavate carefully around existing services
• Good health and physical condition
• Sound organizational and communication skills, with attention to detail
• Works well in a small crew, both independently and collaboratively
• Is reliable, responsible, and trustworthy

Good to have:

• In-depth knowledge and practice of OHSA safety standards and regulations
• Experience responding to after-hours or emergency repair call-outs

Job Description: A Sewer and Watermain Foreman directly manages the installation, maintenance, and repair of sewer and watermain systems, leading a crew of skilled workers to complete all tasks required

Main Duties:

• Supervises workers, subcontractors, and equipment
• Organizes and prioritizes all work tasks and ensures safe working practices
• Keeps equipment and tools in good working order, and maintains records of work performed
• Responds to emergency repair calls and repairs deficient watermain and sewer systems
• Ensures compliance with safety and environmental regulations, inspects work during and after completion and conducts safety talks
• Prepares reports, including regulatory compliance reports
• Instructing crew members on how to use tools/equipment
• Interacting with co-workers, the public, municipal and engineering inspectors, etc.

Required Qualifications:

• Thorough knowledge of best practices, including all necessary tools and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and sewer collection systems
• General experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, and other auxiliary equipment as they relate to water distribution and storm and sanitary sewer systems (ie. pumps and pump stations)
• Good knowledge of flow conditions as they relate to sewer systems
• Ability to read, interpret and comprehend plans and specifications for sewer and watermain systems
• Ability to keep basic records (production reports, crew timecards, safety reports, as-built information, etc.)
• Ability to use a scale, take measurements and complete simple calculations to ensure accurate installation of pipes and structures
• General knowledge of surveying and GPS systems would be an asset
• Ability to plan, direct and supervise the work of others
• Ability to follow oral and written directions
• Ability to withstand heavy labour for extended periods when necessary

Job Description:  As a Sewer and Watermain Mainline Pipe Layer, you will play a crucial role in the installation, repair, and decommissioning of sewer and watermain systems. You will be responsible for laying, aligning, and sealing pipes, ensuring that they meet project specifications and quality standards.

Main Duties:

• Working in conjunction with excavator operator to ensure subgrade elevation and slope is acceptable to receive bedding stone prior to pipe installation
• Grade the bedding stone correctly to make certain sewer pipes will be installed precisely
• Aligning pipes and checking grades during pipeline construction using pipe laser to confirm the pipe has been installed accurately
• Installing manholes, chambers, box culverts, shafts, and all related appurtenances
• Use hand tools such as jumping jacks, plate tampers, pumps, etc. whenever necessary
• Perform all other construction laboring duties when required
• Reporting directly to the Foreman and will be responsible for the installation of sewer and watermain, including concrete structures for both reconstruction and new construction projects

Qualifications:

• Previous experience working in a sewer and watermain crew

Job Description: As a Sewer and Watermain Mainline Topman, you will play a crucial role in assisting the crew in the installation, repair and decommissioning of various sewer and watermain projects. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with the construction team to contribute to the successful completion of various infrastructure projects.

Main Duties:

• Organization:
  • Constantly observe sewer and watermain installation and production in trench and continually prepare all materials required ahead of time to complete the works so that production is not compromised

• Conducting elevation shots, reading grade, shooting the line and ensuring pipe is being properly placed in the ground
• Providing continuous inspections of pipes for cracks, problems with gaskets and any other deficiencies prior to lowering into the trench
• Responsible for cutting and preparing pipes and fittings for installation
• Assisting Pipelayer with installation as needed, locating utilities, and other duties as assigned by the Foreman
• Safely securing all loads by properly rigging pipes, manholes and other materials and equipment for crane/backhoe before being lowered into or removed from the trench
• Maintain orderliness, cleanliness and safety at jobsite

• Team Collaboration:
  • Work closely with the construction team, including equipment operators and labourers, to ensure smooth project workflow

• Communicating with the Foreman, Operators, and all crew members
• Ensures that materials for Pipelayer and other workers are ready as needed on the job site
• Works closely with other crew members using hand signals to coordinate work and ensure safety
• Follow Supervisor’s instructions closely

• Safety Compliance:
  • Adhere to safety protocols and guidelines to create a safe and secure work environment

Required Qualifications:

• Proven experience and knowledge of pipe laying techniques, excavation, and grading
• Worked as a Sewer and Waterman Pipelayer in the construction industry
• Demonstrate organizational skills with strong knowledge and expertise
• Strong work ethic, good communication skills, and ability to work with in a team setting
• Good health and physical condition
• Works well independently and collaboratively on small or large-scale projects
• Reliable, responsible, and trustworthy
• Physically fit and able to work outdoors in various weather conditions – must be able to stand, lift 50 lbs., carry, bend, and reach
• Punctual and available to work a minimum of 10 hours per day, 5 days per week
• Must maintain a valid G driver’s license
• Must be willing to commute to anywhere the work is in the GTA

Job Description:  The Sewer and Watermain Labourer performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled duties required for the installation, maintenance and repair of water distribution and wastewater collection systems.

Main Duties:

• Assist in the installation, repair, and maintenance of sewers, manholes, watermains, hydrants, valves, valve chambers, and all other related appurtenances
• Hand-digging required at times to expose utilities, sewers, watermains, etc.
• Work under the direction of the Pipelayer and Pipelayer Helper or other designated Foremen/Supervisors
• Performs responsible functions within a complex and technical environment involving the exercise of considerable judgment in the field.
• Assist other crew members, including operators, in all typical day-to-day duties.
• Perform related tasks as required.

Qualifications:

• Must display consistency in being punctual, responsible, and dependable
• Must support a safe work culture including the incorporation of safe work practices in daily work activities
• Must be physically fit and able to work effectively with others
• Must be able to work independently without regular supervision in safety sensitive environments
• Must be comfortable working in all outdoor environments for extended periods of time as well as occasionally working around live sanitary sewers when required
• Required to safely operate power tools and small equipment necessary for all related sewer and watermain works (plate tampers, jumping jacks, pumps, stone hoppers, etc.)
• Must be comfortable working within confined and restricted spaces in both water and wastewater environments
• Strong communication skills and related field experience would be considered an asset
